Lenovo recently unveiled its latest flagship under the Motorola brand, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. The Moto Z is the Chinese electronics giant’s latest offering to compete against the phablet-grade flagships from the rival brands. The Moto Z brings a new innovative modular design on the plate, just like the recently launched LG G5 flagship. The phone will be competing against the likes of the popular brand flagship phablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, LG G5, Samsung Galaxy S7 and more. It will be facing a stiff competition from the likes of the budget flagship phablets like the OnePlus 3, which is branded a flagship killer to create ripples in the smartphone market on a global level.
While the Moto Z’s price falls on the higher end of the price spectrum, the OnePlus 3 brings flagship features on a budget. If you are confused over choosing the Moto Z and OnePlus 3, then let’s compare their specifications to help you choose the one that suits your needs better.
Moto Z vs OnePlus 3 – flagship phablets from China
Design
Talking about the design first, the Moto Z’s one of the main highlights is its modular design. The all-metal smartphone lets you enhance user experience by attaching optional modular accessories at the back, which the brand calls Moto Mods. Some of the interesting Moto Mods accessories include the Moto Insta-Share Projector, JBL SoundBoost, Moto Shells, and instant Power Packs. It is one of the slimmest phones with a 5.19mm waistline. The OnePlus 3 on the other hand is the company’s first all-metal smartphone, which is made out of a single slab of space-grade aluminium alloy. The phone is slightly thicker than the Moto Z with a waistline of 7.35mm. So when it comes to the design, the Moto Z and OnePlus 3, both are premium, appealing and durable. But the former has an advantage of the additional accessories.
Display and OS
The Moto Z flaunts a 5.5-inch AMOLED display bearing a whopping 2K (2,560 x 1,440p) resolution. The phone gets a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top of the display to prevent it from scratches. The device delivers an immersive media experience thanks to the high-resolution display that sports a high pixel density of 534 pixels per inch. The OnePlus 3 on the other hand sports a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 401ppi and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 4. As for the OS, both the phones run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out-of-the-box with their respective brand’s custom user interface on top.
Configuration
Moving on to the configuration, the Moto Z and OnePlus 3, both smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 820 processors. While the Moto Z gets 4GB of RAM, the OnePlus 3 boasts an industry-leading 6GB of RAM, which ensures no lags or whatsoever while playing games etc. As for the storage capacity, the OnePlus 3 comes in a single 64GB internal memory variants, which can’t be further increased via a microSD card. The Moto Z on the other hand comes in 32GB and 64GB variants, and can also accept microSD cards up to 2TB in size.
Camera
The Moto Z sports a 13-megapixel rear snapper with a dual-tone LED flash, laser autofocus, f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilisation. For selfies, it sports a 5-megapixel front snapper with an LED flash and a wide-angle lens. Considering its price range, the Moto Z offers mediocre camera features. The OnePlus 3 on the other hand offers a much better 16-megapixel rear snapper with a Sony sensor, f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus, optical image stabilisation, electronic image stabilisation and 4K video capture. For selfies, it gets an 8MP front snapper with f/2.0 aperture and full HD video recording support. So in the photography segment, the OnePlus 3 clearly wins over the Moto Z.
Connectivity and battery

The Moto Z is one of the first smartphones to ditch the headphone jack, and delivers audio via the USB Type-C port. The Moto Z is backed by a 2,600mAh battery, which thanks to the TurboPower charging support gives eight hours of usage in just 15 minutes of charging. The OnePlus 3 on the other hand is fuelled by a bigger 3,000mAh battery, which supports the brand’s Dash Charge technology. However, the company could have done better in the camera and battery segment.
