As a web developer and SEO specialist I am always looking for new ways, technologies and ideas for the development of custom websites with the most functionality. I have used many of the other shopping cart templates such as PrestaShop Magento, Zencart and countless others but there are always one open source software that I always end up coming back to, osCommerce. I will explain in 5 brief but detailed points why I continue to use this for my e-commerce sites.
1. Excellent Structure and Functionality
For me the structure of the osCommerce files make perfect sense and do not take a mid-range programmer very long to work out how the pieces fit together. This non-complex structure allows for excellent functionality to be developed. Whilst the default template is limited and is not the well designed the add-ons and templates mean that truly fantastic websites can be developed.
2. Open Source
Why pay for software on a monthly basis for your website to be maintained. With osCommerce developers can develop the website from the original framework and have no costs to pay after this. I have tried many others and whilst they are easier to use for novices I can still develop a brand new osCommerce website with a completely different layout and theme within a couple of days.
3. Quantities and Quality of Add-ons
One of the most important factors I look for when deciding which web development template to develop from is the quantity and quality of the add-ons that the template offers. Whilst WordPress is without doubt the best open source software for designing websites I have used the e-commerce plugins for the development of e-commerce websites and the functionality is nowhere near that of osCommerce. The add-ons for osCommerce are also completely free unlike other software in which you have to pay from premium functionality.
The Add-on part of the osCommerce website is full of features and functionalities that can turn a simple website into a fantastic one.
4. Fantastic User Community
As osCommerce has been one of the original platforms for e-commerce websites the user community is experienced and probably any problem I have ever encountered has either already been solved or the user community work hard to solve your problems.
With this fantastic user community you have a safety net of any problems that arise that can be solved unlike other platforms where the user community is small, inexperienced or has no interest in providing solutions for fellow users.
5. Proven Results
Whilst it is argued that osCommerce is outdated I have developed websites in the past and as recent as this year that have had excellent results in search engine results. To illustrate these results, TicketVago.com ranks well for Manchester United and Liverpool Fc tickets. These results and the fact I have many other sites which rank well I have had no reason really to try and test new platforms.
From the above 5 reasons I have explained why I continue to use osCommerce as my choice for e-commerce development of websites. The overall reason being that I can develop excellent looking websites that can rank well in the major search engines, with this I have no reason to change at present to change.
