Chinese smartphone manufacturers are creating a niche for themselves in global markets these days. They are not only full of features but also boast high end specifications while being affordable. Meizu M1 is one phablet that has created a lot of buzz among those who desire to own a large display with other features but do not have the money to spend on established brands. Now Lenovo, which is largely a PC and laptop maker, has also jumped into the fray and announced its Lenovo K3 Note. Both these phablets have very similar specifications and features.

Meizu M1 Note was released by the company in January 2015 and it has already created a niche for itself. On the other hand, Lenovo released its latest phablet called K3 Note in March 2015 at MWC. It will be a part of its Lemon series of smartphones that the company has introduced as a value for money products.

Design factor

Both Lenovo K3 Note and Meizu M1 Note have the same candy bar design that is used by other companies for their large screen smartphones. Both are touch screen Phablets with a screen size of 5.5 inches. Their dimensions are also very similar though Meizu M1 is slightly thicker while L3 Note is a little longer and wider than it. Meizu M1 measures 150.7 x 75.20 x 8.90mm while the dimensions of Lenovo K3 Note are 152.60 x 76.20 x 7.99mm. Having a larger body means that K3 is slightly heavier than Meizu M1. While M1 weighs 145g, K3 has a weight of 150g. However, a weight difference of just 5g is not noticeable at all.

Display

Both Meizu M1 and K3 Note have the same screen size of 5.5 inches. Both have capacitive Touchscreen and produce a same resolution of 1080X1920pixels. Pixel density is slightly higher for M1 at 403ppi whereas it is 401ppi for K3 Note. K3 runs on Vibe UI from Lenovo whereas M1 makes use of Flyme 4.0 UI. The screen of M1 is made up of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to make it scratch proof.

Operating system

Both M1 and K3 are Android phones running on Android OS. But whereas Meizu M1 runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, Lenovo K3 makes use of latest Android 5.0 Lollipop. Both are fitted with octa-core processors (1.7 GHz). K3 Note makes use of Mediatek MT6752 chipset and Mali-T760MP2 GPU whereas they are Mediatek MT6752 and Mali-T760 for Meizu M1.

RAM and memory

Both smartphones have the same 2GB RAM. But Meizu M1 is available in both 16GB as well as 32 GB internal memory versions while Lenovo K3 Note has a single 16GB internal memory model. K3 has the provision of SD card slot that can be used to expand its memory while this feature is not available on M1 Note.

Camera power

Both Meizu M1 and Lenovo K3 Note have very similar cameras. Both are dual camera devices with front 13MP and rear 5MP cameras. The rear camera of Meizu can produce image with a slightly higher resolution (4208X3120pixels). It has an auto focus, dual LED flash camera. Thus the camera of Meizu M1 is slightly better than that of Lenovo K3 Note as it can also record videos in HD.

Battery capacity

Talk time offered by a phablet and its battery life are big concerns of the buyers as they do not like to buy phones that require charging every now and then. Lenovo K3 Note is fitted with a large 3000mAh Li-Po battery that provides a talk time of up to 36 hours on 3G. This battery is removable and can be replaced when its life is over. On the other hand, the 3140mAh battery fitted in M1 Note is not removable. It gives a longer talk time of up to 40 hours on 3G. Thus Meizu M1 scores over Lenovo K3 in terms of battery life and talk time it offers.

Connectivity features

Both Meizu M1 and Lenovo K3 have great connectivity features. Both are Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, GPS with A-GPS, Bluetooth V4.0 with A2DP, GPRS, and micro USB V2.0. Both smartphones provide 4G support. However, Lenovo K3 is fitted with FM radio while there is no radio in Meizu M1.

Both Meizu M1 and Lenovo K3 are dual SIM GSM phones but K3 provides 4G support on a single SIM only. Lenovo plans to introduce another variant of K3 called Teana. This smartphone will be fitted with a ceramic speaker that will produce stunning audio effect. However, it will be priced at $151 while the normal K3 will be sold at $145.

Conclusion

In terms of display, processing power, cameras, and battery life, Lenovo K3 Note has more or less similar specifications as Meizu M1. Though Lenovo K3 is priced at $145 which is $15 higher than the price of Meizu M1 Note, it carries the brand name of Lenovo and offers certain features that are not there in Meizu M1. K3 is also thinner than M1 and thus a better choice for those who are crazy about slim smartphones. On the other hand, M1 has a slightly better battery and camera than K3 to make it a better choice for those who are power users and also those who are fond of clicking pictures and making videos. You can also wait for the launch of Teana which is a variant of K3. It will boast of better audio because of inclusion of ceramic speakers.

If you do not like the idea of fixed memory, Lenovo is a better option for you as you can insert micro SD cards to expand its memory up to 32 GB. This is because Meizu M1 is available as 16GB and 32GB phones that have fixed internal memory. If it is not a problem, then you can choose either of these very good looking smartphones that are packed with more or less identical specifications. Remember that Lenovo K3 will be available only in yellow color to impress upon the fact that this is a product that belongs to value for money line of products from Lenovo.
