Essential and Creative Website Features for Mobile Users

It’s the 21st century. We all have smart phones, and we all use them (a lot). So if your site or blog is designed for a desktop, that’s okay. But if you haven’t given any thought to how it looks on a phone or a tablet, then that’s not okay. You’re missing out on a huge category of user experience and engagement. So, here are just a few tips for making those subway users just a little happier with a richer mobile website.

The Obvious

The obvious features are the ones that sync right with the phone. You’ve got a contact page already, right? So you probably already have the website phone number and email. So why just list it? With a phone you can actually put in a click-to-call function. Someone wants to get in touch? They can just tap that button, and it goes right to the phone call. Considering how much it costs to make a website anyway, adding this super-convenient feature to your page is well worth your time.

On top of this, put in an “email us” link too. If you’ve been to a mobile site before, you know how annoying it can be to fumble through the oh-so-simple-on-desktop copy-paste function. You have to tap and drag to try to select the text you want, hope the “copy” balloon pops up, and then change apps to paste in the email address. Why not make it easier and have the phone do the work?

QR Codes

While this isn’t really part of your mobile site, it’s a really cool connection for filling out your mobile experience. If you have a site that’s mobile responsive, why not encourage people to access it on their smartphones? The easiest way to do this is by creating your own QR code. There are a lot of creators out there (like QR Stuff), so it’s easy to do. Whether you link it to your homepage or a special landing page, you’ve got a full mobile experience.
Now all you need to do is post it places. Hand out fliers, hang them up around town or even post it to your desktop site. It’s an easy way to get people to engage with your business on mobile, but it also opens up a whole new avenue for marketing. And you thought pounding pavement was a thing of the past?

Mobile-Only Content and Offers

Finally, to create a richer experience for people on the go, set up some actual incentives for them to do so. Let’s face it—so many people avoid browsing the web on those tiny screens. So give them a reason. Most mobile website editors give you not only the function to adjust response to fit with mobile, but also the ability to include functionality specifically for mobile.
If you’re a graphic designer selling logos, and you want people to check out your site on mobile, offer them a discount when they access your site on their phone. Post a 15% off add (with redemption code) that only shows up if they access your site via their phone. Not only will this add value to the experience, but it will essentially force users to access your site on mobile.

Taking this a step further, you can create content that is tailored toward mobile. If you’re a blogger, some ideas for this could be “inspiration on the go.” Say you’re a travel blogger. Go ahead and write a blog post with cool pictures of your trip to Europe or Turks & Caicos. Post them under the guise that they’re meant to brighten up your audience’s morning commute. “Tired of staring at those ads on the subway? Check out these sunny moments from my trip to the Bahamas.” This way, you’re recognizing that someone is accessing your content through mobile, so you’re giving them something tailored to that experience.

The bottom line is: build your business with mobile in mind. It’s the best way to keep up with the times.
